10 Beauty Myths You Should Stop Believing

Beauty tips and hacks are so amazing and can be really helpful. Unfortunately there are many beauty myths you have certainly come across and most possibly believed. These are the 10 most common beauty myths you should stop believing.

1. Myth: Facial oils are more moisturizing than creams

Truth: Facial oils can be very beneficial and are best used in combination with other moisturizing products. You should avoid using them as moisturizers though. Their molecular weight is too big and they cannot penetrate deeply and since they don’t contain any water, they do not moisturize your skin the way a typical face cream does. Facial oils are perfect to support your moisturizer as they help to seal in moisture and so by using them last, you’re locking in the rest of your skincare routine.

2. Myth: Oily skin doesn’t need a moisturizing cream

Truth: Oily skin is a skin type with the main characteristic that it produces more sebum. Excessive sebum clogs the pores and makes the skin look shiny and sweaty, but it also protects it from dehydration. This doesn’t mean that an oily skin can’t be dehydrated, especially when cleansers with harsh ingredients are used or when the weather is cold and the air is dry. So, oily skin needs to be moisturized and you should opt for products formulated for this skin type as they will also control the excess production of sebum.

3. Myth: Putting toothpaste on a pimple will make it go away

Truth: Toothpaste is not designed to be put on the skin and it is not a good idea to use it as a spot treatment. A conventional toothpaste contains harsh chemicals that are drying and maybe this is the reason that this myth is still believed: if you dry out a pimple, it will go away. Unfortunately, by putting toothpaste on your skin you won’t fight acne and you may cause more harm. All these ingredients can cause irritations and dryness and make your skin look worse. Instead opt for a safe and effective spot treatment.

4. Myth: Facial pores open and close

Truth: The size of your pores is genetically determined. Some people are born with small pores and others with large pores. Pores don’t open and close and you cannot change their structure. The good news is you can approve their appearance by making them look smaller.

5. Myth: There are products that can make stretch marks disappear

Truth: Stretch marks are very common and happen when the skin suddenly stretches or shrinks. Common causes are pregnancy, rapid muscle growth, sudden weight loss or gain, and rapid growth during puberty. They fade over time but are still visible. Many skin care products claim to remove them but unfortunately stretch marks are scars and like any scar, they are permanent. Some products may improve the appearance of stretch marks, but certainly won’t make them disappear.

6. Myth: Washing your face frequently will keep it hydrated

Truth: Washing your face frequently won’t keep your skin hydrated, in fact it will do quite the opposite. It will remove the natural oils from your skin and cause dryness. Using hot water will do things worse, so make sure to use warm or lukewarm water when washing your face.

7. Myth: You should wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 50

Truth: Using a sunscreen every day is very important if you want to keep your skin protected from the sun. A sunscreen with an SPF of 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays from reaching your skin and a sunscreen with an SPF of 50 blocks 98%. As you can see, the protection is almost the same. What‘s more important is how (to all exposed skin), how much (a thick layer) and how often (reapply according to the product’s instructions) you apply your sunscreen.

8. Myth: Natural and organic cosmetics are more effective

Truth: Natural and organic personal care products can be as much effective as conventional products and at some cases even less effective. The reason why you should choose them is because they are safer to use. They don’t contain petrochemicals, toxic preservatives, synthetic fragrances and other harmful chemicals.

9. Myth: If you shave your hair it will grow back thicker

Truth: One of the biggest, oldest myths. Hair doesn’t grow thicker, darker or faster after shaving. Hair starts growing at the bottom of a hair follicle, which is under the skin and shaving doesn’t affect it at all.

10. Myth: Wearing make-up every day will make your skin age faster

Truth: Aging is a natural process and can be affected by many factors (genetics, environment, bad habits), but certainly not from wearing make-up. Just make sure to cleanse your face every night and follow a healthy skin care routine.
